Eye Safety Tips For Kids

How often do you think about protecting your kids' eyes? It's summertime! We slather our kids with sunscreen, make them wear helmets when biking, and watch them like hawks when they're swimming. We search out summer safety tips to ensure our children's health and safety.

And yet, every day I see dozens of kids without sunglasses, squinting in the bright sun at the beach or the park. Eye safety for kids is easy and should be part of every parent's daily regimen. Follow these simple eye safety tips for kids for a brighter and healthier summer!

Sunglasses

Because children tend to spend a lot of time outside and are less likely to utilize sunglasses on their own, they are more at risk for eye damage caused by UV rays. Therefore, it's important to wear 100% UVA and UVB blocking sunglasses while spending time outdoors.

Did you know that eyes can get sunburnt? Even on overcast days, it's important to keep a pair of sunglasses or a hat with you to keep your kids protected.

And don't forget a pair of sunglasses for yourself!

Blue Light - Good and Bad

The sun also emits blue light, which noticeably has a bad reputation, can actually have good health benefits. Blue light can help cortisol production so you can feel awake and energized.

However, it's still okay to want to protect your kids' eyes from the dangers of artificial blue light that comes from electronics because eyes aren't naturally good at blocking blue light. Try out a blue light filtering screen protector for your kids' electronics.

Regular Eye Check-ups

One of the best things you can do for your child's eye health is something simple - regular eye exams! This can help parents stay on top of eye health.

It's hard for a child to know when to advocate for themselves when it comes to their health. Take your child for an eye exam to find out if they need glasses. An eye exam can even spot potential problems such as lazy eye.

Easy Peasy Eye Safety

Keeping your kids' eyes safe and healthy is easy peasy, and should be part of every parent's standard operating manual. Let us know if we've missed any tips that you use for your kids.
