In Search of Comfort
The search for comfort is a deep human need that goes back thousands of years. And it is shared by many of our animal companions. Anyone with a pet cat, or two, knows their desire to find the warmest, softest perch in the house. We can tell the time of day just by seeing where our two kitties are snuggling. In morning they choose my daughter’s bedroom.
It faces east, the sun pours in, and her unmade bed with the covers all bunched up where she threw them off makes a wonderfully warm and soft nest. By afternoon Rex and Maxine have moved to the sunroom, where the afternoon sun streams in and they find a comfortable spot on the couch pillows. In fact, I’m often fighting them for that spot on the couch – because I, too, want a comfortable, soft, and warm place to relax.
Comfortable Clothing for Kids?
So it is established, we seek comfort. And thousands of years ago our ancestors found ways to make clothing for themselves - but did they worry about making comfortable clothing for boys and girls? Let’s see. There is some uncertainty around just when (and why) humans began wearing clothing, but common sense favors the idea that it was for warmth. And that the first clothing was made from animal pelts – imagine how warm a wolverine shawl would be!
As tools were developed, single pelts could be joined into larger garments. Leather tanning allowed for much wider use of animal hides including clothing, sandals, tents, furniture, saddles, shields, and more. But leather was expensive and many people in the Stone Age went naked, or wore skirts made of grass. Ugh. And comfortable clothing for kids? No. Most children went naked during the Stone Age.
What about Comfortable Underwear for Kids?
So the quest for comfortable and affordable clothing continued. And through the ages many materials were developed by industrious and ingenious inventors. Necessity really is the mother of invention. It makes sense that people would look at sheep and figure out that wool could make a nice, warm clothing material for people. But who would look at- hemp
- flax
- agave
- or a silkworm cocoon
and think “I could use this to make clothing?” That requires some imagination!
We can't pinpoint exactly when and where cotton was first transformed into yarn – due to its biodegradable nature not many remnants are left to tell the story. But clues have been found in many diverse locations - and its natural property of soft comfort gradually became known world-wide. It is said that Alexander the Great loved the comfort of cotton garments found in Persia during his conquering journeys, and he is credited with introducing cotton goods to Europe around 300 BC.
Cotton underwear must have been especially comfortable when compared to wool. But turning cotton into usable yarn was very labor intensive; the seeds had to be pulled out by hand. So no comfortable underwear for kids yet.
Finally, Soft Underwear for Kids!
By the mid-1700’s, cotton production could not keep up with demand for the soft, comfortable fabric. The cotton gin and spinning jenny revolutionized the industry and finally allowed for the manufacturing and sale of soft, comfortable underwear for children, as well as adults. By the 1900’s, the underwear business was booming - even for kids!
